Head of Excess Casualty

The Senior Vice President and Head of Excess Casualty will lead a team of approximately 30 underwriters to execute the strategic and operational plans of the orginizations national Excess Casualty unit. In collaboration with the Chief Underwriting Officer and the Chief Operating Officer-Underwriting, the HEC sets and implements the strategic direction for the Unit, establishing priorities for the underwriters and ensuring they are writing business within the orginizations appetite and within the underwriters' authorities.

  • An expert technical underwriting background, with advanced knowledge of commercial general liability and excess liability coverages and sound underwriting judgment.
  • Strong leadership skills that will guide and inspire high-performance teams toward achieving their strategic plans and profitable growth targets, while relentlessly focusing on underwriting profitability.
  • The ability to identify and utilize KPIs that drive profitable underwriting and manage results successfully across regional offices.
  • The ability to allocate resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal confidently with senior executives, underwriters and business partners.
  • The ability to make effective presentations on underwriting strategies and targeted classes with producers and reinsurers.

Education Requirments

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, preferably with a major or coursework in economics, risk management, actuarial science or related fields.
  • Post graduate degree a plus.
  • CPCU or CIC a plus.
  • At least twelve years of experience in underwriting, preferably in Commercial Excess & Surplus lines.
  • At least five years underwriting Excess Casualty Risks.
  • Experience with managing and developing high-performance teams across multiple offices.
