E&S Underwriter - Cannabis
Position Overview:
My client is seeking an experienced and driven E&S Package Underwriter to join their growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for underwriting both larger, higher property total insured value (TIV) risks associated with multi-state operators and smaller, retail-heavy risks in the cannabis sector. You will work closely with brokers and clients to evaluate, analyze, and provide tailored insurance solutions to meet the needs of the cannabis industry. This position requires a strong understanding of both property and casualty lines, and a deep knowledge of the risks associated with cannabis businesses.
Key Responsibilities:
Underwrite E&S package policies for cannabis operators, including both large-scale, multi-state operators and smaller retail-focused operations.
Assess risks and determine appropriate coverage for property, casualty, and other specialty lines related to cannabis businesses.
Collaborate with brokers, agents, and clients to understand business needs and develop customized insurance solutions.
Evaluate the risk profile of potential clients, analyze loss data, and apply underwriting guidelines to provide competitive quotes.
Manage renewals and endorsements, ensuring accurate and timely policy administration.
Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and cannabis-specific risks to ensure the company remains competitive in a rapidly evolving space.
Maintain strong relationships with brokers and key stakeholders in the cannabis insurance market.
Work with the claims team to ensure proper claims handling and coverage interpretation for cannabis-related risks.
Participate in industry events, webinars, and networking opportunities to maintain expertise and expand the company's presence in the cannabis insurance market.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in commercial E&S underwriting, with a focus on property and casualty coverage.
Previous experience working with cannabis-related risks is strongly preferred, particularly within the retail, dispensary, or multi-state operator sectors.
Deep knowledge of E&S underwriting practices and market dynamics.
Strong understanding of cannabis industry regulations and unique risk exposures.
Ability to analyze risk exposure, assess loss data, and structure appropriate insurance products.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build relationships with brokers, agents, and clients.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in insurance, risk management, or a related field.
Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) or other relevant underwriting/designations are a plus.
