Chief Actuary

Key Responsibilities:

  • Model Development & Optimization:
    • Lead the development, validation, and optimization of complex actuarial models for pricing, risk assessment, and financial forecasting.
    • Design, implement, and maintain predictive models (e.g., GLMs, machine learning models) to inform business strategies and enhance decision-making.
    • Utilize advanced statistical techniques to identify patterns, trends, and insights from large datasets.
  • Data Analysis & Insights:
    • Leverage strong data manipulation and statistical skills to extract actionable insights from large, complex data sets.
    • Perform experience studies, risk analyses, and stress testing to assess financial and insurance risk.
    • Work closely with data scientists and IT teams to ensure the integration of data, models, and reporting systems.
  • Risk Management & Reporting:
    • Provide technical guidance in assessing and quantifying risks across the organization's portfolio.
    • Develop and maintain actuarial reports for senior management, highlighting key findings and risk exposures.
    • Oversee the preparation of actuarial assumptions, including loss ratios, discount rates, and reserve calculations.
  • Leadership & Mentorship:
    • Lead and mentor a team of actuaries, providing guidance on technical actuarial methodologies and model implementation.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., underwriting, finance, claims) to ensure alignment on technical assumptions and model outputs.
    • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that actuarial methodologies and tools remain at the cutting edge of industry practices.
  • Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance:
    • Ensure that actuarial models and methodologies comply with regulatory standards and internal policies.
    • Perform model validation, back-testing, and performance monitoring to ensure ongoing model accuracy and relevance.
    • Provide expertise on actuarial software, systems, and tools, ensuring the team utilizes the most appropriate and effective solutions.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication:
    • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
    • Collaborate with external auditors, consultants, and regulators on actuarial matters as needed.
    • Participate in strategic planning sessions and provide actuarial insights to support business objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • Professional Certification:
    • FSA (Fellow of the Society of Actuaries) or equivalent actuarial qualification is required.
    • Associate-level or higher certification in actuarial science preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 7+ years of experience in the actuarial field with a strong technical focus (e.g., statistical modeling, machine learning, advanced data analysis).
    • Proven experience leading complex actuarial projects and managing actuarial teams.
    • Experience in actuarial software (e.g., R, Python, SAS, MATLAB) and data analytics platforms.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Advanced knowledge of statistical modeling techniques, predictive analytics, and machine learning algorithms.
    • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, or similar.
    • Experience with actuarial systems (e.g., Prophet, Moses, SAS) and databases (e.g., SQL).
    • Familiarity with actuarial reserving, pricing, and financial modeling techniques.
