Job Title: Commercial Lines Field Underwriter

Location: Flint, Michigan

My client is seeking a highly motivated Field Underwriter to build strong relationships with our agency partners and help grow our multi-line commercial business in Michigan. Policies will range from small to mid-size and align with our commercial risk appetite. This position works closely with the underwriting team, following established workflows to ensure all policies are underwritten efficiently while meeting service standards and performance goals through the first renewal. This is a remote position with the expectation of in-office training for the first 3 months.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver's License and good driving record required.
  • Proven experience in commercial lines underwriting with at least 5 years as a P & C Commercial Lines Field Underwriter.
  • Sales-oriented: able to solicit, qualify, negotiate, and close accounts in a manner that promotes deeper partnerships with our agency partners.
  • Strong analytical and solutions-driven mindset needed to assist with strategic business planning and growth.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills, responsiveness, and willingness to bring appropriate levels of underwriting to each opportunity.
  • Relevant insurance industry certifications (i.e., CPCU, AU, ARM, or CIC) are a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct weekly agency visits to build and maintain strong relationships with assigned agency partners and clearly communicate appetite and coverages to improve hit ratio.
  • Leverage relationships with Agents and CSRs to identify opportunities to write business and advocate for our company as a preferred commercial lines carrier.
  • Ensure all submissions are effectively managed to reach quoting status.
  • Refer accounts appropriately if additional authority is required.
  • Manage your book of business profitably while balancing growth that aligns with our company's expectations and profitability goals.
  • Own and analyze all aspects of the new business underwriting process from exposure, pricing, service, and sales perspective, consulting and collaborating with desk underwriters regularly.
  • Determine pricing, coverages, account rounding, and identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues to communicate messages most effectively to our agency partners.
  • Research the market: stay updated on industry trends, market conditions, emerging risks, and primary competitors.
