“The War for Diverse STEM Talent:Strategies for Shaping Inclusive Work Cultures”
Monday May 16, 2016
In the United States today, diverse talent is underrepresented within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) industries. This is evident in several leading technology firms whose workforces have a clear gender gap. In April 2016, the Wall Street Journal reported that women hold only 18% of Google’s technology jobs and only 22% in leadership positions, with other tech giants having a similar or even smaller percentage of women in leadership positions (Twitter: 22%, Apple: 28%, Microsoft: 17%, Facebook: 23%). These statistics decrease even more when you look at the representation of certain minorities, specifically African Americans and Hispanics in STEM careers, comprising only 13% of the total STEM workforce.
Many employers have implemented a variety of strategies to increase the diversity of talent within their organizations. However, what also becomes apparent are the existing issues around not only getting diverse talent into STEM careers, but also creating inclusive work cultures that allow diverse talent to thrive within an organization, and eventually reach leadership roles.
To discuss and debate the issues around creating inclusive work cultures, Phaidon International and Women Who Code have partnered to host an Inclusive Talent Event evening at General Assembly in New York City titled, “The War for Diverse STEM Talent: Strategies for Shaping Inclusive Work Cultures” (http://bit.ly/STEMNYC). This event is an opportunity to bring together leaders and professionals from across the STEM industries, to share their views and expertise about this topic, while also collaboratively working to devise solutions to reduce the diversity gap in STEM.
The event will be hosted at General Assembly in New York City on May 16th. To kick off the event, Katharine Zaleski, Co-Founder and President of PowerToFly, will offer an opening presentation, sharing her experience and insight about creating work environments that support women. This presentation will be followed by a discussion panel of key leaders and diversity and inclusion advocates from across the STEM industries.
The panel will be moderated by Brigid Moynahan, CEO of The Next Level Inc., and includes experts from the New York area, who can provide valuable insight to this topic. The panel is comprised of: Robin Snipes, Account Executive, Dropbox; Isa Notermans, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Spotify; Anna Beninger, Director of Research, Catalyst; and Janiece B. Greene, Financial Inclusion and Gender Consultant.
These leaders from their respective fields will share their experiences and expertise, providing insight into this important topic,, and will be answering questions from the audience.
